LOUISE ZHANG

A proud Chinese-Australian, Louise Zhang uses painting, sculpture and installation to explore her culture and sense of identity. She is inspired by the folklore, symbolism and art motifs in Chinese culture and draws on traditional Chinese botany and mythology to convey her modern identity.

YOU ARE FORGIVEN (LOTUS) (2020)

 You are forgiven (Lotus) symbolises the lotus flower, which is associated with purity, rebirth and enlightenment in many Eastern religions. The text in the painting reads, ‘I forgive you/you are forgiven’. Zhang uses cultural symbols and motifs as a way to explore her experiences of navigating the world as a ‘third culture kid’.

SCHOLAR MOUND STUDY #3 (2019)

The sculptural work Scholar mound study #3, 2019, is a playful questioning of the traditional Chinese rock ‘Gongshi’. Shaped by wind and water, these rocks were displayed like works of art and valued by scholars for their ability to capture the creative energy ‘qi 气’.
